Meeting called to order at 3:35 p.m.
SSC Members present: Cherrylyn Bondoc, Paula Grooms, Bill Kalchik, Jerrye Ross, Jennifer Wroblewski, Cory Binns, Martha Castiglia, Cynthia Laudenslager, Hawley Sandfer.
SSC Members absent: Vicki Romero, Gerry Csaszar, David Lavelle.
Others in attendance: Heidi Brown, Jeanine DeBarros, Cecelia Miranda, Su Pool, Lynn Thomas.
Meeting Minutes: Motion to approve the January 2009 meeting minutes was made by Jennifer Wroblewski, 2nd by Jerrye Ross. Cory Binns abstained from the vote, and the remaining people voted to pass the motion.
Committee Reports:
A. Schools committee: Dingeman Elementary is revamping and updating their disaster supplies. They are also hosting a family art night and a mother son night. SRHS is producing Bye Bye Birdie. The high school staff and students are requesting support for their drama department. EBS is requesting support by attending their farmers market. EBS is also hosting a talent show and a father daughter dance. They are dropping their spring gala and they are starting a jog-a-thon. Marshall Middle had 89 students attend the regional science fair. If you have a 5th grader matriculating to 6th grade, the principal at Marshall is going to have some parent orientations and tours. The SRCA Volunteer recognition night is in April.
GATE DAC discussion: Norbert Tanzer is absent. GATE funds are looking very scarce please voice your opinion to Congress. GATE education seminars for parents are listed on the sandi.net website. This issue was a topic of discussion at the latest district advisory meeting.
Sub-Committee Reports:
A. Traffic: Jeff Carter suggested that the back kindergarten gate become 3 min. zone. Jennifer Wroblewski notified the FFA. MRE teachers reminded her if we did this, then there would be no place for the kids to wait after school. The FFA can pursue a parent patrol for this back area. Cory Binns noted that Carroll Canyon Road will be reduced to 2 lanes instead of 4 lanes due to bridge demolition beginning in the next few months. This will likely have an impact of MREs traffic flow.
B. ELAC: This meeting has been delayed to February 11, 2009. After the meeting, Jennifer Wroblewski and Martha Castiglia will meet and to decide the plan and direction for MRE.
New Business:
A. Review of membership: Since being elected to the SSC/SBMT, member David Lavelle has missed a greater number of meetings than is allowed, as stated in the Miramar Ranch Elementary SSC and SBMT By-laws. The By-laws allow for a member to be deemed truant after being absent from two consecutive meeting. According to our records, Mr. Lavelle was absent from the last thirteen SSC/SBMT meetings. Hawley Sandfer motioned that David Lavelle be classified truant and relieved of his obligation of membership on the SSC committee. The 2nd was by Bill Kalchik. The rest of the group unanimously approved the motion. Mr. Lavelle will be notified, via letter, of the committee decision.
B. Extended Day Guided Reading Program: MRE would be able to support 44 children. Pat Tyre and Mary Kelly have been teaching on Mondays and Wednesdays and will continue through April 15, 2009. The program runs from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. Isabelle Beck developed the program. Isabelle Beck trained both Pat Tyre and Mary Kelly. Included in the program are kids in second grade through fifth grade. The extended day the district funds guided reading program.
Tracy Tanzer is coming back on Mon., Tues., and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., to institute the pull out guided reading program. Tracy Tanzer will work with four or five children and at time. Tracy Tanzer works with kindergarten and first grade students. This program will run through the end of May, 2009. The pull out guided reading program is funded by MRE.
C. Budget update: The school budget is on hold. There is a mid year 33 million dollar cut with anticipation of a 63 million dollar budget deficit coming next year. Principal Wroblewski does not have any budget information yet. All budgets are due by March 5.
Due to the budget deadline of March 5, Jennifer Wroblewski requested that the next SSC/SBMT meeting occur on the first Tuesday of March, 2009, instead of the 2nd Tuesday. The Budget Update line item on todays February 10th agenda does not allow for a vote. Under the Greene Act Requirements, action cannot be taken on items not posted on an agenda unless a unanimous vote finds a need for immediate action. Hawley Sandfer motioned that due to the immediate action required, it is necessary to revise our Budget Update agenda item to allow for a vote to take place today. Jennifer Wroblewski 2nd. The motion passed unanimously in favor. Jennifer Wroblewski made a motion that the committee take an immediate action to change the next SSC/SBMT meeting to March 3, 2009 due to the budget deadline of March 5. The 2nd came from Hawley Sandfer. The vote passed unanimously in favor.
Lynn Thomas asked about Grier telephone message that was sent to all students and personnel in the district. As she understood, Grier stated clearly that the students would not be affected and there would be no shortage of supplies. This is different than how we operate at MRE.
Old business:
SRCA Grant: A draft copy of the kindergarten refurbishment project was handed out. Lakeshore has heavy duty sand toys. Lynn Todd spoke to Eagle Scouts to see if the lawn can be leveled and pavers added. Also, the district has been out to check the lawn area to see what they can do and what they can allow. The next draft will be voted on during the March 3rd SSC meeting.

A homeowners tree branch fell for the 2nd time. Jen spoke to somebody from code compliance because Jennifer Wroblewski filed a complaint. We have been lucky so far, but it is a safety concern. Other trees on school property have been identified as fallen or unsafe. Jennifer Wroblewski will talk to Rick Mussleman, the school custodian, and have the district take care of unsafe trees on MRE school property.
